PROGRAM RATIONALE

Melkhoutfontein faces high rates of poverty and trauma, with children especially vulnerable to the effects of violence, neglect, and limited opportunities. Chronic stress and trauma can severely impact a child's emotional, mental, and physical development. In this context, there is an urgent need for interventions that offer both immediate relief and long-term growth. Project Stillwater addresses this gap by providing safe spaces, positive role models, and evidence-based therapeutic practices paired with the joy and benefits of physical activity. This integrated approach is proven to foster healing, build confidence, and nurture hope for the future.

 

In the current economic circumstances in South Africa, so many of our young children from the informal settlements grow up to become alcohol and drug addicts, prostitutes, and abusers themselves.  Interventions are needed to break this cycle.  Being so impoverished and thus rarely having the opportunity for therapy, the need to reach at least some of these children, is becoming bigger and bigger.
